Terminology and Definitions





Since the Young Marines is chartered through the Marine Corps League with clear ties to the United States Marine Corps, certain military terms and jargon are commonly used throughout the organization. Below is a list of common military terms and their meaning.




  • As You Were: Cancel the previous command or go back to the last position you were at.
  • BDU's - Camouflage uniform
  • Bulkhead - Wall
  • Blouse - Button up shirt of the Young Marine wardrobe
  • Canteen - Something you drink out of
  • Chow - Food (can also be used in place of the words breakfast, lunch, or dinner)
  • Cover - There are many definitions: hat, dress the line, remove the hat
  • DDR - Drug Demand Reduction
  • Drill Deck - Where First and Final formation happens 
  • Fire Watch - Person or individuals assigned the duty of maintaining order after lights out.
  • Gear - Personal belongings, Issued equipment
  • Go-fasters - Tennis shoes
  • Head - Bathroom
  • HQ - Headquarters
  • HW - Head and Water Call
  • Ink-stick - Something you write with
  • Lock it up - Quiet! (Pipe down may also be used)
  • Mess Hall - Dining hall or dining room
  • Overhead - Ceiling
  • Police - To straighten up or tidy up
  • PFT - Physical Fitness Test
  • POD - Plan of Day
  • PT - Exercise/Physical Training
  • Rucksack- Backpack or red drawstring bag
  • Shiver Gear - Coat/Gloves/Black Watch Cap
  • Square Away - To straighten, make ship shape, or to get settled
  • Starboard - Right side
  • SQD - Squad
  • Swab - A mop
  • Trouser - The pants of the Young Marine wardrobe
  • UOD - Uniform of the Day
Young Marine and Adult Rank Abbreviations

Young Marines
  • Poolee - A future Young Marine that has not started their recruit classes yet
  • YM/RCT - Recruit
  • YM/PVT - Private
  • YM/PFC - Private First Class
  • YM/LCpl - Lance Corporal
  • YM/Cpl - Corporal
  • YM/Sgt - Sergeant
  • YM/SSgt - Staff Sergeant
  • YM/GySgt - Gunnery Sergeant
  • YM/MSgt - Master Sergeant
  • YM/MGySgt - Master Gunnery Sergeant
We add "YM" before each Young Marine rank to show that they are Young Marines. 


Adult Volunteers

  • Adj - Also seen as RAdj. - Adjutant 
  • AMO - Activity Medical Officer
  • CSO - Community Service Officer
  • PIO - Public Information Officer
  • PM - Paymaster (aka Financial Manager)
  • PSG - Parent Support Group
  • QM - Quarter Master (aka Supply Master)
  • TO - Training Officer
  • XO - Executive Officer
  • UC - Unit Commander
